Achievements in Vascular Surgery

Founding member of International Society for Endovascular Surgery. The society has over 2000 members, publishes the Journal of Endovascular Surgery which is now listed with Indicus Medicus and is the main journal dealing with advanced endovascular techniques. Dr. Bray was one of seven vascular surgeons to initiate and develop this society. It is now the most referenced source in the field of endovascular procedures for peripheral vascular and aneurysmal disease.

Initiated vascular ultrasound workshops in Australia. The workshops are held annually and are the main forum for vascular ultrasound in Australia. These were subsequently handed over to the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine. Currently these meetings are held conjointly with the annual ANZ vascular surgical meeting. Dr. Bray organised the first three workshops in Newcastle. These workshops were characterised by presentations and demonstrations by expert sonographers from the USA.

Founder and director of the Cardio Vascular Centre in 1984, this became one of the most respected ultrasound diagnostic services, due to accurate advanced techniques by highly skilled sonographers and quality of service. The CVC was sold to the Hunter Imaging Service in 2003: the aim being to develop a Hunter Vascular imaging group which would incorporate all the latest vascular imaging modalities.

Executive Board member of Lake Macquarie Private Hospital responsible for the development of the hospital to its present status. It was very important that people in Newcastle and Hunter region had a choice when they wished to have their advanced surgery performed, as John Hunter Hospital had limited funding, especially for endovascular procedures. During his time on the board, the hospital became a major cardio-vascular centre with the best equipment for advanced cardio-vascular procedures. This hospital now performs more cardio-vascular procedures each year than the regional teaching hospital.

Conduct demonstration sessions in angiography, angioplasty and endovascular surgery for vascular surgeons and interventionists at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital. Organized training for vascular surgeons and ultrasonographers from China. Accredited instructor for Cook fenestrated aortic grafts with funds to conduct a full audit on all procedures performed. Accredited supervisor for carotid angioplasty. Member of Vascular Prostheses Clinical Advisory Group.

Initiated the renal transplantation programme at Royal Newcastle Hospital.

Developed original learning units for undergraduate teaching in the Medical School at Newcastle University with Prof. Geoffrey Kellerman.
